http://www.hardwoodinstaller.com - National Wood Flooring Association Basics school held in the St. Louis, MO area. Included; classroom education, installing unfinished and prefinished hardwood floors, sanding and finishing techniques. Recognizing problems and how to avoid, to floating wood floor repairs.
Transcript:
The National Wood Flooring Association offers several types of educational events throughout the year that includes the basics school; an entry level four day event popular with new installers and finishers, manufacturer reps, dealers, salespeople, and inspectors to name a few.
Considering the NWFA has been in existence before the widespread popularity of prefinished floors, the emphasis is more on site finished flooring. Or those that are installed in their unfinished form, then sanded and finished.
Have we piqued your interest? Wondering about details? The seminar consists of approximately two hours classroom education each day, followed by intermittent bleacher education from experts Daniel Boone and Frank Kroupa. The balance involves actual hands on working with different applications of hardwood flooring, where you will be permitted to use all installation and finishing tools, but no power tools that include cutting of material.
[running floor buffer with sanding pad]
Daniel Boone: If I'm sanding walnut this paper will stay sharp for a good while, but it will load up with dust. What happens when it loads up with dust?
Student: It won't bite anymore.
Daniel Boone: Right. Won't bite anymore. So it actually lifts the paper off the floor.
[Showing Daniel wiping stain on oak floor]
Johannes: Once Daniel gets his second area done, he can start wiping up. But a stain like this being a linseed oil product, you don't want to let it set too long. Fifteen minutes.
[Students recognizing problems, several successive video clips]
Other highlights of the basics school besides an exceptional lunch include recognizing installation or finishing flaws. How to approach and repair or avoid the all together. Also included are board replacements for both solid unfinished floors and the popular prefinished floating floors of today.
Currently the class runs $475 for NWFA members, while there are also rates for non members. Lodging is discounted through the Hampton Inn located one mile from the NWFA headquarters where transportation to and from is provided by the hotel daily.
After school activities are numerous in the neighborhood, featuring at least a dozen restaurants and plenty of shopping within walking distance.
